George Johnston initiated it back at the end of October 2003 and by Novemeber the site had reached number 2 on Google.
Thousands of blogs placed the link with the anchor text saying “miserable failure” and “failure” pointing to the site. Google responded by giving the site a top placement for those search terms.

This method is known as ‘Google bombing’ but it is a legitimate tactic to use for your own website when you are getting links. Recipricol links still work because they are a key factor in determining what search terms your site should be placed under in the search engines!
Google and the other search engines are taking into account the link text description also but the real firepower comes from the anchor text. No matter what anyone tell you. Link building is the only way to get good search engine ranking - for now anyway. It is also a great source of traffic.
